It Is Finished

Easter at St. James

Nothing feels better than finishing a term paper, a doctoral thesis, or a major project at work. There is a moment when you finally exhale and rest. It is done.

From the cross, Jesus speaks those same words: “It is finished.” With His final breath, He declares that His work is complete. Why does He say it? Because everything needed for your salvation has been accomplished. The striving is over. You can rest.

So often, religion feels like a checklist. Do this. Avoid that. Try harder. Be better. It can feel like life is one long test, and the goal is to score higher than everyone else. We know we are called to love our neighbor and follow God’s will, but if we are honest, we fall short. Comparing ourselves to others might make us feel better for a moment, but it never truly satisfies.

And it is not just religion. Everywhere we turn, we are told to improve ourselves. New routines, better habits, seven steps to success. The message is constant: you are not enough yet.

But the Gospel tells a different story.

Jesus has already done what we could not. He lived perfectly. He loved completely. He obeyed fully, even to the point of suffering and death on a cross. In His death, He takes on the weight of our sin. In His resurrection, He defeats death itself.

What is true of Him becomes true for you.

In Him, you are forgiven.
In Him, you are made new.
In Him, you will rise again.

It is finished.
Your striving for worth is finished.
Your guilt and shame are finished.
Your fear of death is finished.

This does not mean that we stop doing good or loving others. It means we are finally free to do so without fear, without pressure, without needing to prove ourselves. We do not work for approval. We live from it.

Because of Jesus, you are enough.

So rest. Not just at the end of a long week, but every day. Rest in what He has done for you.

It is finished.

And it is a message worth hearing again and again.

John 19:30
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Matthew 28:5–6
But the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.’

Romans 6:8–9
Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again

Easter Morning

Easter Sunday is one of the most joyful mornings of the year at St. James! As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus together, we are preparing for a full and festive day of worship.

Because we are currently worshiping in our lower level with limited seating capacity, we are adding two additional services on Easter Sunday to make room for everyone. To help us prepare well and create the best possible experience for all, we’re asking you to let us know which worship service you’re planning to attend.

Your response will help us distribute attendance thoughtfully and ensure that as many people as possible can celebrate Easter at St. James.

Thank you for helping us plan for a joyful morning together!
